This is the Part Two of the whole CHAPTER 13 of the Book:
"Forgive Yourself, Foremost: A Way To Vanquished Depression, Disability & Failure" by Babatunde Odutola.

Common Denominator Factor One - Self Determinism or Power of Choice

The first of these additional factors to a depressed state of emotion is the sudden or prolonged suppression or destruction of a person’s self-determinism. Self-determinism or power of choice is the core of a human being. It is the most native, sensitive and volatile attribute that every thought, emotion, action, dream, beingness etc. ad infinitum, is built and based. Self-determinism is the prime mode of expression of the basic personality of the person. Self-determinism is the expression of life of and for the individual.

When a person self-determinism is threatened, suppressed or wrecked, the person is no more a sentient, rational being. Whereas a person can be sold into slavery in body, he or she will remain human, sentient and free to the extent that he or she refused to believe self is a slave. The moment a person believes he or she is a slave, the person has lost his or her self-determinism and therefore becomes a property to be used and discarded. And, we know slaves are the worst property any sane human can desire or have. Now, when a person’s self-determinism is threatened, suppressed or destroyed, life itself does not matter. No, there is no life without self-determinism. Self-determinism is life. Take a person’s self-determinism away or threaten it, and the person will cut that life short.

Yet, there is the matter of hope. This thing, hope, impacts everything humans think, emote or do. A person can live a thousand years in abject poverty where there is hope; hope for a better day, honest friend, great job, etc. So, the suppression or threatening or destruction of a person’s self-determinism, if the person’s emotion is relatively high, may not be enough reason to commit suicide.

The combined factors of 1) sudden or prolonged emotional depression and 2) sudden or prolonged threat to, suppression or destruction of a person’s self-determinism are a surefire recipe for suicide, war, intractable conflicts, and certainly suicide.

COMMON DENOMINATOR FACTOR TWO – THE LAW OF CAUSE AND EFFECT

The other factor is the coming to effect or fruition of the laws of Cause and Effect. This law states that 1) for anything to happen it must be caused, and 2) there must be an equal and opposite reaction - effect, to every action - cause. Nothing comes to exist without a cause. In other words, there’s no effect without a cause. We can loosely call this the Law of Karma.

We can see clearly that where a person see life as “war”, “kill or be killed”, “survival of the fittest”, “dog eat dog”, “interaction of higher or social animals”, and so on, we will surely have situations as those confronting us in our minds, our families, societies and the world. What do you expect animals to do, low, high, social, political, unsocial or antisocial? Definitely, reasoning would not be one of the expectations, right? And, I dare say there would not be ethics, responsibility, honor and other human virtues.

There is one proof that makes the philosophies of “life is war”, “life is a kill or be killed proposition”, “life is survival of the fittest”, “it’s a dog eat dog life”, “life is an interaction of higher or social animals” etc. not only fallacious, but inhuman. The proof is the fact that whereas humans will commit suicides but animals don’t. Right? So, why would a ‘smarter’ animal commit suicide? Humans commit suicides because humans aren’t animals, but divine being, souls, who inhabit and use human bodies to operate in the physical universe.

And, the nature of the human being is such that ethics and justice are so vital, and consequential to a sane, happy and uplifting activities that any deviation causes the being to lose sanity, wellness and becomes criminal, sick, and suicidal.

The “life is a war”, “life is a kill or be killed proposition”, “life is a survival of the fittest”, “life is a dog eat dog activity”, “life is an interaction of higher or social animals”, and so on are the cause of the unethical, immoral and criminal behaviors and activities in life. A “higher or social animal”, an animal still, can steal, cheat, deceive, break oats, tell harmful lies, twist facts, take undue advantage of others, rob, rape, murder, purvey harmful products, traffic dangerous drugs, and so on down the list of the maladies that befall humanity today. The ‘stronger social or higher’ animals, as individuals and society, will wage war to plunder, destroy and lay waste the socioeconomic infrastructure, lives, dreams and livelihoods against others to ‘protect’ themselves.

It is said that there is no conflict or differences of opinions or interests in and of humans that reason and communication alone cannot resolve. This is true if we were speaking of sentient and divine human beings, and not animals - social or higher - because animals don’t reason, they react based on instinct.

So, where we find someone who is capable enough of committing suicide, we must conclude that they must have committed serious and numerous transgressions against 1) self, 2) others, and 3) life in general.

Transgressions are contrary to our native state and therefore, as stated elsewhere in this work, we take corrective or fatal action as retribution for having offended against our own ethical nature.

The coldest, most relentless, incorruptible and ruthless judge who supervises over the continuous sanctity of our thoughts, emotions, and activities in life – I call it Conscience for a lack of a better descriptive word– will wreck the appropriate measure of corrective or destructive sentences on us, having transgressed against our ethical and just nature. Suicide is one of such sentences.

Where a person has come to the realization that he or she has caused enough harm to life, others and self – committing transgressions – the appropriate divine law will be called upon to take its cause: the removal of the corrupted being from the life streams to allow for balance to continue to prevail.

Life, like everything in it, requires, nay demands, the continuation of the good, ethical, sane, well etc. beings while attempting to remove the bad, unethical, insane, sick etc. The sick of the soul are the worst, and so they resort to the final solution: the taking of own life.

I dare say those with heavy laden minds and soiled hands are society’s melodramatic, flamboyant, loud and public displayers of suicides.

COMMON DENOMINATOR FACTOR THREE – THE OCCURRENCE, RECOGNITION AND ACCEPTANCE OF HAVING FAILED

The third factor that can be a reason to "end it all” is the occurrence, recognition and acceptance of real or imagined failure to achieve, acquire or attain a desire or goal, or fail to successfully repel or keep in abeyance a nonsurvival entity etc.  which is deemed irredeemable.

Let’s define what failure is not. Failure is not the occurrence of an undesirable or unwanted event, in itself. Failure is not the non-occurrence of a desirable or wanted event, in itself. Failure is not one’s recognition of the occurrence of an undesirable or unwanted event, in itself. Failure is not one’s recognition of a desirable or wanted event which didn’t occur, in itself.

Failure is: The occurrence and recognition of a failure must be succeeded or followed by one’s acceptance of the reality of that undesirable event that happened or the desirable didn’t happen, as a failure. That’s when failure has occurred and has the power to effect one badly. The moment a decision is made by the person following the occurrence and recognition of a nonsurvival or undesirable event or the non-occurrence of a survival or desirable event, a failure has occurred. And this is when a person has failed, really.

I am sure we can deduce what ‘success’ might mean to all manners of people from the above anatomical definition of failure. It is not the event in itself, it is the recognition and acceptance of the reality of the event that make for success or failure.

Let’s understand this: Not every human being around you and out there in the world has the purpose to become wealthy, successful, healthy, and so on. Actually, what some of us consider ‘success’ and ‘failures’ are mostly at variance with the ideas of others. What a person considers successful might be abject failure as far as another was concerned.

There is a fact that we must understand if we truly want to have a harmonious society. This fact is not everyone wants to be free of pain, anguish, illness, poverty, and so on down the list of what humanity has designated “nonsurvival” and “undesirable”.  These nonsurvival factors are socially made, defined and enforced. Usually, they never are of the core life purpose of the individuals in the society.

Some want to experience life, all of life; the beautiful, the ugly, the pleasurable, the agonizing, the pampering spoliation, the soul-gnashing want, the comfort and safety, the trepidation and terrors, ad infinitum. Not everyone of us wants to be what the do-gooders amongst us wanted for all humanity.

So, we must be wary what ‘failure’ means to a person. We cannot look at a ‘starving’ person and determined, for them, that what they need is ‘food’. We cannot come into the presence of a debilitatingly ill person and determine, for them, that their condition is pitiable and we must give them good health.

We must determine one thing first: what does the person want? We must consult their self-determinism, first and foremost. Whatever we must do for them must be what they want, of their free will, self-determinism. Otherwise, we’ll continue the way we have been. That which the person wants is the route to assisting the resolution of the person’s problem. It is certainly not what we think based on what we ‘see’ or ‘know’.

When a person who has the life purpose “to experience abject poverty” is made wealthy or even comfortable such a person may act as would a person who desire wealth, but attracted into the harsh embrace of gnashing poverty everywhere and in everything he or she attempted.

The being we call the human being, minus the body, and see its expressions but which we do not see directly is not a limited being. This being that is the human being, minus the body, cannot be killed, imprisoned, maimed, and so on. Unlike its vehicle, the body, that we see and become enthralled by and worship, thinking it, the body, is the person, the being cannot suffer of and from anything unless it so decided or believed so.

If we, as beings, can experience anything and everything, what would illness, poverty, loneliness, disease, anguish, slavery and so on mean to us? Nothing, absolutely. Neither will wealth, success, power, wellness, love, etc. make any difference. The modulating factor is if I consider the ‘survival’ and ‘nonsurvival’ items, some of which are listed above, as important and necessary to the attainment of my aims and to the playing of my game or those games in which I am interested.

To succeed, we need to recognize that the three factors above, individually, may not be adequate to cause a person to commit suicide or crimes against others. We must see that a person who suffers of any of the three factors above may commit murder, be a living vegetable, or commit suicide.

On the one hand, where a person’s emotion is between Antagonism and Covert Hostility, and

1) having his or her self-determinism suppressed, severely threatened, or destroyed, and/or

2) having himself/herself committed transgressions against self or others, and/or

3) having come to a realization of being a major failure in acquiring what he/she considers survival aid or unsuccessful in dispelling what he/she considers nonsurvival, he/she is liable to commit murder or similar destruction-of-others act, failing at which self-destruction may ensure.

On the other hand, where the person’s emotion is within low Covert Hostility and high Grief, with any of the three scenarios operating, such person is liable to commit suicide, or ‘erroneous’ murder. Additionally, a low grief emotion and apathy, no matter which or all of the above three enumerated factors were operating, the likelihood of living an almost lifeless and vegetable life is strong. Otherwise, where a resurgence of being or emotion was successful a slow, silent and depressive suicide will ensue.

Ordinarily, people within these emotional bands are already committing suicides by several means, including refusing to eat properly, if at all, operating in an automatic and ceaseless mind-damaging worrying mode, being overwhelmed by the unceasing use of drugs (which are poisonous biochemicals) that further dampen and depress an already low emotion and so on. Time is the only unknown agent as far as the maturation of their ending it all is concerned.
